Though Don Draper made that remark to his fictional colleagues on “Mad Men,” real employees at PR firms are altering the discussion as well. Advertising Age reported that agency stocks—as well as employment positions—are at an all-time high, and that includes PR. Public relations firms in the United States employ nearly 60,000 people.
PR pros are keeping busy at those agencies: The Holmes Report estimated the 10 top global PR firms brought in $4.8 billion in fee income in 2014, collectively growing more than 5 percent from 2013.
Of the top 10 agencies—Edelman, Weber Shandwick, FleishmanHillard, Ketchum, MSL Group, Burson-Marsteller, Hill + Knowlton Strategies, Ogilvy Public Relations, Golin and Havas PR—all but two are headquartered in the United States. MLS Group and Havas PR have their main offices in France.
Edelman holds steady in the top position. According to The Holmes Report, the firm made more than $812 million in fee income in 2014—an increase of nearly 9 percent from 2013. The firm has earned such awards and titles as The Holmes Report’s Global Agency of the Year (2013),Advertising Age’s Best Places to Work (2010 and 2012) and the Cannes Grand Prix for PR (2014).
Edelman has several positions open for savvy PR pros, including senior vice president of health media in Illinois, digital account executive in Florida, planning, content and strategy account executive in Georgia, assistant account executive for the firm’s Xbox account in Washington state, and creative vice president and producer in Washington, D.C.
Each position requires different skill sets and years of experience. Still, candidates should have worked on a variety of PR campaigns and have a demonstrated knowledge of content creation, digital media and measurement.
Edelman employs more than 5,000 workers in 65 offices; nonetheless, the competition for staff positions is stiff. Candidates wanting to stand out should try these employment tips.
